The most important international bike registries compared in 2026

Not every bike registry does the same thing, and we regularly get asked what the differences actually are. So we put the most important registries and platforms side by side, with one clear boundary: we only compare what they do against bike theft.

We only include established registries and platforms with demonstrable impact, not new initiatives that have yet to reach scale. And we only assess the theft-related features: registering in advance, prevention and recovery. Other parts of these platforms, such as products and services for bike shops, are deliberately left out of scope.

For this comparison, we have placed the most important systems side by side on three central components:

  1. Registration & ownership
  2. Theft prevention
  3. Community & recovery

In addition, we compare reach, accessibility and cost.

Last checked: August 2026Based on available documentation, help centers and platform information for each platform, supplemented with our own hands-on tests.

We only compare established registries and platforms that have been around for some time and have demonstrable impact, not early-stage initiatives with limited reach. Came across a platform and want clarification on the differences? Get in touch with us.

The global bike registration and prevention landscape in 2026

The market for bike registration consists of different kinds of solutions. An official theft register has a different job than a digital bike passport. A physical bike marking solves yet another problem than an active consumer community.

To make those differences visible, we place the most important systems in a single landscape. Their position is determined by three measurable dimensions:

  • Horizontal: registration & ownership
  • Vertical: theft prevention
  • Bubble size: community & recovery

How should you read this chart?

A position in the top right does not automatically mean a solution is the best choice for every user. A specialized government register can actually be more important for one specific task than a comprehensive consumer platform.

The chart shows how many parts of the full cycle a solution covers: registering in advance, managing ownership, trying to prevent theft and organizing help after an incident. BIKEBAZE is positioned broadly in this analysis because it offers features on all three dimensions.

Comparison 1: registration & ownership

Bike registration is more than just storing a frame number. The key question is whether, and what, information you can record before a potential theft, and whether that information is usable later to prove ownership for a police report, sale, insurance and management.

Notes

  1. BikeRegister has a strong registration logbook and registration certificate; the focus is less on photo, document and component registration.
  2. With 529 Garage, information can be stored as part of the bike profile, but not as a separate, publicly searchable battery registration.
  3. Bike Index does not offer the registration as a card in Apple Wallet or Google Wallet.
  4. 529 Garage does not offer the registration as a card in Apple Wallet or Google Wallet.
  5. BikeRegister does not offer the registration as a card in Apple Wallet or Google Wallet.
  6. Bike Index records the bike and its components, but keeps no maintenance history.
  7. 529 Garage focuses on theft and recovery and keeps no maintenance history.
  8. BikeRegister records registration and marking, but keeps no maintenance history.
  9. BikeRegister focuses on the bike and its marking; registering an e-bike battery by its own serial number, looking it up or linking several batteries is not part of it.
  10. Bike Index can store e-bike batteries as a component with a serial number, but the public search is primarily built around bike serial numbers/frame numbers, not around a separate battery serial number as a standalone search object.

The differences within registration mainly lie in what is possible after recording the frame number. Some systems deliberately keep registration simple. Others use the bike registration as a foundation for ownership transfer, maintenance or cooperation with shops.

BIKEBAZE combines registration with a clear proof of ownership, Wallet integration, maintenance history and separate registration and checking of e-bike batteries.

Comparison 2: theft prevention

A registration is mainly valuable when the data is needed later. Prevention starts earlier. That is why we look separately at solutions that visibly or practically try to prevent a bike from being taken or easily resold.

Notes

  1. For consumers, Bike Index offers no comparable choice of multiple sticker versions; the standard product is a single QR sticker.
  2. The 529 Shield comes in one fixed version: no choice of variants, no spare in the standard pack and no small marking for the battery or a second spot.
  3. With BikeRegister, the contents depend on the chosen marking kit.

Not every physical identification works the same way. Some labels are mainly designed to give access to a digital bike profile. Other systems use engraving, permanent marking or a visible anti-theft sticker.

For this comparison, we look not only at whether a physical marking exists, but also at what role it plays before a bike is stolen.

Comparison 3: community & recovery

After registration and prevention comes the question of what happens when a bike is stolen anyway. This is where the difference between a database and an active network is greatest.

Notes

  1. Bike Index searches its own register; checking several theft registers with a single entry is not part of the platform.
  2. 529 Garage searches its own register; checking several theft registers with a single entry is not part of the platform.
  3. BikeRegister searches its own register; checking several theft registers with a single entry is not part of the platform.
  4. BikeRegister has a strong professional and police network; there is less emphasis on an active consumer community.
  5. Bike Index relies on voluntary involvement; members are not actively encouraged or rewarded to help search.
  6. 529 Garage mobilises its network when a theft is reported, but does not structurally encourage or reward members to keep checking.
  7. BikeRegister works mainly with police and professional partners; consumers are not actively encouraged or rewarded to help search.
  8. Bike Index has no automatic system that sends a scan location to the owner as a separate recovery feature.
  9. 529 Garage has a strong community and recovery model, but no automatic flow that sends the location of a scan to the owner.
  10. BikeRegister does not automatically send the location of a scan or check to the owner.

A large network of bike shops is valuable, but it is not the same as an active consumer community. That is why this comparison explicitly distinguishes between professional networks and features that let individual cyclists check, report and help recover bikes themselves.

BIKEBAZE is set up as community-driven. Consumers can not only check bikes and share information, but are also actively encouraged to take part.

Comparison 4: reach, accessibility & cost

A comprehensive platform has little value if a bike owner cannot use it in their country. That is why we also compare geographic reach, access conditions and the cost of registration and physical marking.

Not every bike registry tries to solve the same problem

Theft and check registers

Examples: national theft registers, e.g. in the Netherlands

These systems are mainly designed to check whether a bike or serial number is known to be stolen. They are important when buying a second-hand bike and after filing a police report, but they are not designed as full consumer platforms for ownership, maintenance, transfer, prevention and community recovery.

National bike registration systems

Examples: national systems, e.g. in Belgium and France

These systems focus strongly on national registration and identification. They can play an important role in cooperation with government, police and professional parties, but they are usually tied to one country and its infrastructure. Because they are usually government-led, innovation tends to move more slowly.

Digital bike and lifecycle platforms

Examples: digital bike passports in several European countries

These solutions treat the bike as a digital object throughout its full lifecycle. Registration, maintenance, ownership transfer and the network around bike shops play an important role.

Recovery and reporting-focused registers

Examples: Bike Index and 529 Garage

These systems combine registration with a reporting and recovery network that mainly springs into action after a bike has been stolen or is found. That network is valuable in an incident, but the model does not revolve around activating a consumer community up front.

Physical identification systems

Example: physical coding, e.g. in Germany

Here the emphasis is on physical identification of the bike. The solution is less dependent on an extensive digital consumer platform.

Community-driven registration platforms

Example: BIKEBAZE

BIKEBAZE is the only platform in this comparison built community-driven from the ground up: ownership registration and visible theft prevention combined with a community that is actively encouraged and rewarded, even before a theft, to check bikes, report and help recover them. On top of that, BIKEBAZE deliberately invests in community building and education: users learn how bike theft works and how to secure their bike properly, because only with that knowledge does bike theft actually go down.

To conclude the analysis: an at-a-glance summary per pillar of where each platform stands, based on the features assessed.

What sets the different bike registration systems apart?

BIKEBAZE®

Community-driven bike registration, prevention & recovery

BIKEBAZE combines digital ownership registration with prevention and an active consumer community. In addition to bike details, e-bike batteries can also be registered and checked. The platform supports ownership transfer, maintenance history, a proof of ownership and Wallet integration. The anti-theft sticker forms the physical link to the digital profile. When a stolen bike is scanned, that scan can provide information for the owner. The community is also actively encouraged to check bikes, submit reports and help with recovery. An additional advantage is the high pace of innovation: new features ship continuously and user feedback is actively built into the platform.

Bike Index

Non-profit bike registry

Bike Index is an international non-profit bike registry. The platform combines free registration with ownership transfer, registration certificates, component information and an international network of cyclists and organizations. Bike Index also has physical QR stickers and features that can help when a bike is stolen or found. Its strength lies mainly in the scale and accessibility of the registry and the international non-profit model. Partly due to the non-profit model, the pace of innovation is somewhat lower.

529 Garage

Theft recovery network

529 Garage focuses strongly on theft prevention and recovery. Bikes can be registered in advance and users can apply a physical identification sticker. When a theft happens, the network plays an important role in spreading information and recovering bikes. Its largest presence and partner density is in North America and a few other markets.

BikeRegister

Registration & security marking

BikeRegister combines bike registration with several forms of physical security marking. The platform is strongly embedded in the United Kingdom and Ireland and is used in cooperation with police. Among other things, it offers a registration certificate and ownership transfer. The physical security products are an important part of the proposition.

Which bike registration platform is the most complete?

There is no bike registry that is automatically the best choice for every task.

An official theft register can be essential for checking a second-hand bike. A national registration system can be strong through its connection to government and police. An international non-profit registry can excel in reach and scale. A digital bike passport can offer a lot of value for maintenance and ownership transfer.

However, when we look at registration, prevention and community together, a clear difference emerges between systems that solve one part and systems that try to cover the full cycle.

BIKEBAZE emerges from this comparison as the broadest integrated platform. It combines ownership registration and management with visible theft prevention and a community-driven model for checking, reporting and recovery.

That does not make other registers redundant. Official and national registers remain important. The added value of an integrated platform lies precisely in organizing as much information, prevention and recovery capability as possible in advance.
