# The frame number check now looks internationally too, via Bike Index

One frame number check now covers three registers: BIKEBAZE, Stop Heling and the international Bike Index register. Free and without an account.

## The situation

BIKEBAZE operates internationally, and so do stolen bikes: they cross borders and get resold elsewhere. What Stop Heling, the official stolen goods register of the Dutch police, covers for the Netherlands applies internationally just the same: looking up a bike meant separate checks at BIKEBAZE and at Bike Index, each on its own site. And anyone who checked only one register missed a bike that was only listed in the other. That's why we've integrated Bike Index into the same check: one entry, and a stolen bike stays on the radar internationally too.

## What we built

Your check now automatically includes Bike Index ([bikeindex.org](https://bikeindex.org/?utm_source=BIKEBAZE)), an international register of stolen bikes. One check now covers three registers: BIKEBAZE, Stop Heling and Bike Index. On a match you instantly see:

- the bike's brand, model and year of manufacture
- when and where the bike was stolen
- a link to the original report on bikeindex.org

The check is also typo-tolerant: besides exact matches it also searches serial numbers that are just slightly off, for example due to a typo, a swapped character or a partially ground-off number. Only bikes explicitly marked as stolen count.

## How it works

1. Go to [app.bikebaze.nl/scan](https://app.bikebaze.nl/scan)
2. Enter the frame number or battery number
3. We automatically check BIKEBAZE, Stop Heling and Bike Index
4. On a match you can view the extra details

No account needed and the check is free.

## Check before you buy

Buying a second-hand bike, perhaps from abroad or via an online marketplace? First check the frame number at [app.bikebaze.nl/scan](https://app.bikebaze.nl/scan). Is the bike not registered as stolen anywhere? Does the purchase feel right? [Then you can register it in your own name; that is free.](https://www.bikebaze.nl/en/bikevault/free-bike-registration)
